Monkeypox outbreak in Europe can be stopped, WHO says

World Health Organization

On Tuesday, World Health Organization officials that evidence has shown that the number of people who are currently suffering from Monkeypox in Europe is declining.

Many European countries and a few parts of the United States have seen a week-on-week decline in cases, despite scarce vaccine supplies.

“We believe we can eliminate sustained human-to-human transmission of monkeypox in the (European) region,” said WHO Regional Director for Europe Hans Kluge.

“To move towards elimination…we need to urgently step up our efforts.”

The launch of Bavarian Nordic’s monkeypox vaccine rollout has been negatively affected by a limited supply of the needed shot. The vaccine is also approved for smallpox, although regulators are taking steps to stretch out existing stocks.

By injecting the vaccine intradermally, vials of the shot can be pushed further to use 5 times more than what is normally allowed.

Regulatory agencies in the U.S., EU and GB support changing how vaccines are given by injecting a smaller amount of it which increases potency by fivefold.

In addition to the vaccine scarcity and supply crunch, there are other factors at work behind the earlier detection, which leads to patients isolating themselves sooner.

“We noticed that people – particularly men who have sex with men who are in particular risk groups – are much more informed about the disease.”

There have been 47,600 confirmed cases of monkeypox worldwide, in 90 countries.

This figure includes documented cases in “Years 2016 to 2018”.

COVID, POLIO

There are expected to be more cases of CFD and other respiratory viruses, at least those due to COVID-19 and other type viruses, in the cool months, as is typical.

Authorities of the WHO said that this should happen in the upcoming Autumn/Winter season.

As preventative measures that kept seasonal flu at bay in 2021 and 2020 don’t exist now, it may not be a typical flu season this year.

Brandon Smallwood said this is true.

Polio, a deadly disease that once paralyzed tens of thousands of children every year, has now spread in London, New York and Jerusalem for the first time.

With polio finally back on the map, there’s a rush to vaccinate everyone who is potentially at risk.

The cases seem to be linked to a vaccine called “vaccine-derived polio,” which rarely stems from using an oral polio vaccine that contains partially live virus.

Children are getting vaccinated

As children are getting vaccinated, they have some period of time where they shed viruses in their feces. Vaccinated communities, if they are not properly protected, will have a chance to have the disease mutate back into a harmful version of the virus.

While countries such as Great Britain and the United States no longer use the live vaccine, many others have adopted the use of this preventative measure – particularly to stop outbreaks. This allows for polio to spread globally, which previously would not have been possible.

The evidence suggests a polio virus was detected in all three locations, said Dr. Siddhartha Datta from WHO/Europe.

However, some have questioned whether there is a connection between these cases.
